Pronto Pup vs. Poncho Dog

Walking through the Minnesota State Fair, you'll notice the always-packed Pronto Pup booths. My curiosity finally got the best of me and I had to try one. How does it compare to another common corn dog?

I created a poll on LinkedIn related to this topic earlier this week, and I’ve already learned enough to want to redo my poll question. Of course, starting with making it select all that apply after my husband ate both on a trip to the fair this year…

As a bonus to researching the Minnesota State Fair, I’ve been formally introduced to a fair classic, the Pronto Pup. I’ve never been a corn dog fan, but I am a curious person. I’ve walked past Pronto Pup stands at the fair my entire life. In fact, Pronto Pups were introduced to the fair in 1947, just 18 years after Stanley S. Jenkins patented deep fried food on a stick in 1929. They have a signature booth color, kind of a mustard yellow, and you can find them all over the fairgrounds. It’s hard not to notice them.

I’ve read a few sources with different opinions on what separates a Pronto Pup from a Poncho Dog, both corn dogs but quite distinct. Walking down one street, the two stands are across the street from one another. From my research at the fair and online, Pronto Pups are made with a consistent process, less sweetness, a less grainy texture, and slathered with ketchup and/or mustard before it’s handed to you. Otherwise, it’s still a corn dog.

Both my husband and I picked the Pronto Pup over the Poncho Dog. It’s a classic for a reason. To be clear, this was just a fun personal experiment, and another fun question to ask fairgoers. We also loved getting to compare two food items at the fair. We’re already planning for our next taste test for 2027.
